What is periodontal disease?
The term periodontal means “around the tooth.” Periodontal disease (also known as periodontitis, pyhorrea and gum disease) is a common inflammatory condition, which affects the soft tissue around the tooth and supporting bone. Periodontal disease is loss of the bone around your teeth which can lead to shifting teeth, loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss. There is no cure for periodontal disease, however it is treatable with surgical and non-surgical procedures as well as good oral hygiene at home.
Signs you may have periodontal disease
Bleeding
Moving teeth
New or bigger spaces between
Receding gums
Bad breath or bad taste in your mouth
At least once a year, you should be seen for a full periodontal exam. This exam should include:
Gum pocketing and recession measurement
Checking for loose teeth
Assessment of how your teeth fit together
